The isekai genre has become a mainstay in the light novel, manga, and anime world over the last decade or so. Isekai literally means “another world” in Japanese, and if you’re not familiar with the genre, it typically involves our protagonist meeting a less-than-savory fate in our world and finding themselves reincarnated in a fantasy universe. Sometimes, complete with brand-spanking-new powers! Gone are the days of office drudgery!
In this post, we’ll be talking about some of the most recognizable isekai genre tropes around, so without further ado…
Truck-kun
Fondly called “Truck-kun”, this is one of the most popular choices when it comes to methods of getting isekai’d. Though there are others, Truck-kun is arguably the most iconic.
Getting reincarnated with a super powerful skill
Another common theme is the protagonist finding themselves reborn in another world with a god-tier skill, like Rimuru in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime! Whether it’s the ability to absorb skills à la blue mage, or insta-kill, there’s plenty of variety out there.
Alternatively, getting reincarnated with a really useless skill
The other end of the spectrum involves what appear to be totally useless skills. Were you hoping for something to help you in combat, or some kind of infinite money glitch? Unfortunately, you have been blessed with the ability to grow the best produce this side of the capital.
Being abandoned by your party
Alas, being betrayed by your trusted companions is another staple of the isekai genre. Usually, that member isn’t entirely pulling their weight, though, so you can hardly blame the rest of the party… right? And hey, it always results in some epic adventure!
The RPG status screen
A lot of isekai tropes take themselves from video games, all the way down to being able to see your own stats on a pop-up menu right in front of your eyes. Honestly, this is one that I think would be nice to have in real life. Wouldn’t it be handy?!
