Launched on June 23, 1980, Weekly Young Magazine (often called Yanmaga) is one of Japan’s premier seinen manga publications, targeted primarily at young adult men aged 18 to 40. Unlike shonen or shojo titles aimed at younger audiences, seinen magazines delve into darker, heavier, and more complex subject matter. Historically, chapters are released on a weekly basis within the physical magazine, though digital publishing now allows readers to easily follow individual series without buying the entire issue.
Even if you have never picked up a physical copy of Yanmaga, you have almost certainly encountered its massive pop-culture legacy. Over the decades, the magazine has birthed global phenomena and iconic series such as Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA, Shuichi Shigeno’s Initial D, Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell, 3×3 Eyes, and the high-stakes gambling thriller Kaiji.
